Using this type of stimulus, researchers can manipulate both the expectations of the participantprior to viewing the figure, or the actual physical characteristicsof the figure itself, biasing recognition of one image over theother. One of the most famous examples of this type of figureis the "face-vase" figure introduced by Danish psychologist EdgarRubin in 1915 (Goldstein, 1999). The idea of this separation of images is commonly referred toas "figure-ground reversal", and was a major influence of Gestaltpsychologists. Only oneimage in the reversible figure can be perceived at one time, allowingresearchers to examine a recordable response from participants( Stark,1999). Ambiguous figures are stimulithat contain two perceivable images that seem to reverse. One way to measure the differences inthese two types of processing is to present a stimulus to people thatcan be perceived in more than one way. ![]() If a perception is influencedby what a person expects, or has experienced before, it is referredto as "top-down" influence. Perceptionsinfluenced by the visual field itself, or changes in stimuli arereferred to as "bottom-up" influences. Oneway of studying the way that memory and experience interact withperception is to look at the differences in true object perceptionand perceptions influenced by memory and experience. Understanding the waymemories, experiences and expectations are perceived can enhance theway we view perception as a whole through better understanding. The influence of the human brain on visual perception is largelystudied in the field of psychology today. (Paper compiled from individual papers written by theseven student in PSY 440, Spring 2000) As long as the first and last letters are in the correct place it doesn’t matter what order the letters of a word are in.Top-Down v Bottom-up Experiment Paper Investigating the Relative Influence of Top-Downversus Bottom-Up Processing on Viewing Ambiguous Figures The human mind uses top down processing to read, as it does not read every letter by itself, rather the word as a whole. Top down processing sensory (sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound) input into large chunks of infomation. ![]() The mind is slower to interpret the color of the word than the word itself because people automatically recognize the word before thinking of the color. This is because top-down processing uses your existing knowledge to make an educated guess about the sign’s contents.Īnother example would be the Stroop effect, in which color words are printed in other colors (the word “blue” printed in pink ink, the word “white” printed in green ink, and so on). Despite this, you are still able to read the sign. As you are driving, you see a sign for a restaurant which is missing several letters. It is influenced by context (what we expect to find in a given situation) and motivation.Īn example would be you driving down a street in a city you are not familiar with. It can be either conscious or unconscious. Top-down processing begins with thoughts and flows downward to the senses it is initiated by a larger concept, idea, or object and works from the general to the specific. Top-down processing is the cognitive process through which our brain uses information that has been brought into the brain via one or more sensory systems. ![]() iPhone activation required on iPhone purchases made at an Apple Store with one of these national carriers: AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or T‑Mobile. In addition to not truly absorbing information, the fact that “Kahoot!” extra credit has an emphasis on reaction time rather than pure knowledge is unfair, because some people might know the material in the games just as well, but not have the reaction time to win extra points for their letter grade. Every time a new question is asked, the contestant only has approximately five seconds to read the question without the answers displayed along with it. ![]() “Kahoot!” is also often a basis for extra credit in classes, but because players are more concerned on winning the game for extra credit, they do not absorb the answers to the questions being asked. This component of the game teaches that speed is more important over legitimate knowledge of course material and comprehension of the question. “Kahoot!”, considering the results of this study, is essentially a waste of review time, when students could be using class time to study more efficiently.Īnother odd concept that is specific to “Kahoot!” games is that in order to win more points, one must answer the question the fastest, or faster than their competitors. According to a 2014 study, taking notes in longhand form is the most effective way to retain information. “Kahoot!” does offer a break from traditional styles of learning such as lecturing and taking notes, however, if one of the main points for using “Kahoot!” is try to review vocabulary and concepts to prepare for tests, it is simply not the most effective way of doing so. In CMANO, when you fire one, it accelerates to a fixed speed that only depends on its altitude band (1620.2500 kts). This would be clear to anyone who's ever had to study any missile in any depth, basically.ĬMANO uses range and speed as the describing parameters for these missiles, whereas more proper ones should be the burn time, thrust and drag (or at least, burn time and delta-v!).Īs we are flight simmers, let us take an AIM-120C-5 as an example. This can be correct for certain kinds of cruise missiles, but very inappropriate to the SAMs and AAMs for example. The entire concept is rather wrong way around in CMANO, where the missiles accelerate to fly at constant speed, and climb to "a cruise altitude" and so on. More of an issue to me is, IMO, the missile simulation. Other than that, I find the sub warfare to be okay in CMANO, although simplified in many aspects in comparison to actual sub sims. But then, I understand its approach is a bit different, particularly allowing for the real-time micromanaging. It is interesting that a strategy game that has potentially huge scale of operations, such as CMANO, actually doesn't really simulate the effects of C&C breakdown, lost comms and so on, except by some scripting by the scenery author. When appropriately pinned in a fight, they may fail to register your orders almost altogether. In some tactical level strategy games (such as the good old Close Combat series), it actually takes some time by the units to start executing your orders, then picking up their stuff and start moving. In CMANO, the issue is that it is ambitiously wide in scalability: in one scenario, one micromanages a single sub, whereas in another one the player is driving a WWIII essentially. That is, how to model (or when to choose not to model) the command propagation. Truly a step up from the old Harpoon though. This is in my mind a very interesting point when discussing of various strategy games and even some simulators. My only real gripe is they handled Submarine Warfare pretty poorly with constant communications. If one 20 ounce bottle costs roughly $0.75, then dividing that cost by 20 ounces reveals the cost per ounce. Let’s break down the soda cost per bottle further to determine the cost per ounce. By comparing unit rates, savvy customers are able to make price comparisons based on common units of the product regardless of packaging and advertised “sale” prices. What are unit economics One unit one customer: Typically, the ratio of a customers lifetime value (LTV) to the costs to acquire that customer (CAC, which. This is helpful to make informed decisions at the store, as the volumes of product in various packaging are often different. The process of breaking down the cost to a smaller unit reveals the unit rate of the product. This breakdown to determine the cost per bottle may be helpful to determine whether I buy the eight pack of one type of soda, or the individual 20-ounce bottles of another brand on sale for $0.50 each. This quick calculation tells me that each 20-ounce bottle costs approximately $0.75. It gives a variable cost ratio of 0.1 or 10. In such a situation, consider a product with a per-unit variable cost of 10 and a per-unit sales price of 100. ![]() Under the first method, the mathematical calculation is performed on a per-unit basis. The example provides the price of an 8-pack, but what if I want to determine the cost of one 20-ounce bottle? The ratio \(\frac\) provides that information. There are several ways in which the variable cost ratio can be calculated. If we look at this last example a little closer, we’ll see that there is room to break down the rate even further. Considering the following data, lets calculate Contribution, PV Ratio, BEP & Margin of Safety. The variable cost per unit is 8, and the total fixed cost is 40,000. Lastly, let’s say we have an 8-pack of 20-ounce bottles of soda and the cost is $5.98. Company A manufacture and sell 5,000 articles at a price of 20 per article. If we have a pound of deli meat and the cost is $9.99, our rate would then be $9.99 per pound. Let’s say we have a 12-ounce box of pasta, which costs $1.49. When we calculate rate, we divide by the second value, so we are finding the amount per one unit. In the examples listed here, the rate that you agree to pay is simply the cost related to the quantity of the product. Let’s consider the treasure trove of rates that may be in your grocery cart the next time you go shopping. The values that are being compared are called the terms of the rate. For example, if a product costs 8 to produce, and your gross profit margin is 20 percent, you can calculate your pricing by dividing your cost by (1 - 0.2). ![]() The concept is pretty straightforward, as rates are nothing more than ratios of values that represent different units of measure. Rates are spoken about and used every day in many aspects of life. This math concept is practical and useful, so we hope that you come away with a solid understanding and confidence in interpreting the rates that are all around you.
